Figuring It All Out

Last week App State hosted alumni from the Communication department to come in and speak to current students. Most of the presentations were held independent of class at various times throughout the day, but our Internet Communication class featured a guest speaker. What stuck out the most from our guest's presentation was that she told us that she had to figure out what it was she wanted to do, and that at one point she was a semester away from graduating before switching majors.

A wave of relief swept over me. I will be graduating in May and, even though I have no plans to switch my major, I'd be lying if I said I had it all figured out. While I'm not receiving any sort of overwhelming pressure from home, it just feels like I should have a more concrete plan right now than I do. I mean, I have no idea, whatsoever, as to what I'm going to do after I graduate.

But, do I really have to have that all figured out right now? Like our guest speaker told us, she thought she had it figured out, right up until she changed majors with one semester left to go.

And I'm not knocking her decision to do that, far from it. By all means, you should be doing what you want to do with your life. Enjoying what you do for a living is the most important aspect of a career in my opinion, and finding the right job to do just that can be difficult.

It takes time to figure it all out.

But don't rush it. I'm taking my time because I want to enjoy my last semester of college(even though I've been here for five years). My time at App State has been special, and now it's in its waning hours. One day I hope to be a season ticket holder for App State football, coming back to Boone for as many game days as I can, enjoying my career(whatever the heck that is).

But that will take time. I hope I have enough of it.
